Gold Medal Award Recipients

The Gold Medal is the highest award given by the SCMR to an individual for distinguished and extraordinary service to the field of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and to the Society. 

2024 Gold Medal Winners

David Bluemke, MD, PhD, MsB

Aprofessor of cardiovascular imaging in the radiology department at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He was previously a tenured senior investigator and Director of Radiology and Radiologic Sciences at the NIH. He completed his radiology training in diagnostic radiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where he became Director of Clinical MRI and Professor of Radiology and Medicine.

Dr. Bluemke’s contributions more than 750 peer-reviewed publications with an h-index of 150, over 300 national and international presentations, and training more than 30 U.S. and international post-graduates. He was the PI of the NHLBI’s first multi-center population study using cardiovascular MRI (the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis), and developed standards used worldwide for MRI diagnosis of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. He is a fellow of the ACR, NASCI, ISMRM, and the American Heart Association (AHA) and has served on the editorial board for multiple journals. He is the past Editor of the field’s leading journal in the field, Radiology. Dr. Bluemke was named an Honored Educator by the RSNA for the past three consecutive years. He served on the board of trustees and as treasurer for the Internal Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM); as president of the North American Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (NASCI); on the board of the SCMR; and as past chair of the American College of Radiology (ACR) Cardiac Accreditation Committee.

Raad Mohiaddin, MD, PhD

A Professor of Cardiovascular Imaging at the Royal Brompton Hospital and Imperial College London, UK. After qualifying in medicine from Mosul University Medical College – Iraq and general medical training, Professor Mohiaddin pursued a clinical-academic career, joining the newly established CMR Unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London in 1984. He has since been concerned with the development and applications of CMR techniques to further our understanding of cardiovascular diseases, guide diagnosis and management, and assess prognosis. His research interest covers a wide spectrum of congenital and acquired cardiovascular conditions and includes pioneering work on quantitative blood flow measurements, vascular wall imaging and arterial wall biophysical properties. He was twice awarded the William S. Moore award of the ISMRM (1991 and 1993). Professor Mohiaddin is a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Radiologists and the European Society of Cardiology. He is a founding member of SCMR and was a Board of Trustees member. He has served on the scientific program committees of numerous scientific and medical societies. Professor Mohiaddin was assistant/associate editor of JCMR for 20 years and is on the editorial board and reviewer for numerous other journals. He has over 400 publications, four published textbooks and a long list of invited lectures. Professor Mohiaddin has trained several generations of young cardiologists and radiologists in CMR, many of whom are currently leaders in the field. He has numerous successful grant applications, PhD students’ supervision, world-wide collaborations and served as PhD examiner for several prestigious universities.
