Description
This unit is supported by a comprehensive and state-of-the-art cardiac imaging infrastructure, providing a complete translational platform for both clinical service delivery and advanced research.
The core dedicated facilities comprise:
A High-Field Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Service: Featuring two 3 Tesla MR scanners and one 1.5 Tesla MR scanner, all specifically configured for cardiovascular imaging. This multi-scanner setup provides exceptional flexibility, allowing for high-resolution anatomical assessment, tissue characterisation (including fibrosis and infiltration via parametric mapping), and functional analysis. The 3T scanners offer a superior signal-to-noise ratio for enhanced image quality, particularly beneficial for research protocols and stress perfusion scans.
A Premium Computed Tomography (CT) Service: Equipped with a 320-slice CT scanner. This technology enables volumetric whole-heart imaging in a single rotation, virtually eliminating motion artefacts and significantly reducing radiation exposure. It is expertly utilised for coronary artery assessment, planning of structural heart disease treatments (TAVI, MitraClip, etc.), and complex anatomical evaluation.
Furthermore, this dedicated unit is complemented by the wider Trust’s extensive resources, ensuring a fully integrated multi-modality imaging approach:
Multiple Echocardiography Systems: Providing readily available access for comprehensive ultrasound assessment, including 3D, strain imaging, and contrast echocardiography.
A Cardiac Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scanner: Offering unparalleled capabilities for the assessment of myocardial viability, inflammation, and infection, as well as quantitative myocardial blood flow measurement.
This collective infrastructure establishes a premier imaging hub capable of delivering a full spectrum of diagnostic and prognostic evaluations, from routine clinical care to cutting-edge academic research.
