Amit R. Patel MD, FACC, FSCMR, FSCCT is Julian Ruffin Beckwith Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia, where he is the Director of Cardiac Imaging. He earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at University of Chicago, his cardiology fellowship at Temple University, and an NIH T32 Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship at University of Virginia. He started his career as a faculty member at the University of Chicago in 2008, where he directed the cardiac MRI and CT program. His research focus has been to understand how cardiac imaging can be used to better understand heart disease and improve the cardiovascular care of patients, with a particular interest in myocardial perfusion imaging, improved detection and risk stratification of infiltrative and inflammatory cardiomyopathies, and assessment of novel image analysis tools. His research program has been consistently funded through NIH, institutional, and industry sources. He has over 225 publications and served on and/ or chaired multiple committees for SCMR, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and American College of Cardiology. He was the inaugural Vice-Chair and subsequent Chair of the Certification Board of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. He additionally served as the Vice Chair for the ACC Advanced Training Statement on Multimodality Cardiac Imaging and has helped co-author training statements for cardiovascular magnetic resonance and advanced echocardiography. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance from 2021 to 2024 and was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance from 2020 to 2026. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Patel is a passionate educator and mentor, recognized by the SCMR Education award in 2025. He has organized multiple conferences including the SCMR physician pre-conference and the stress perfusion hands-on workshop. He has mentored numerous medical students, residents, cardiology fellows, and advanced cardiac imaging fellows who now have successful careers of their own.
