This study aimed to investigate whether excess left ventricle (LV) trabeculation is associated with decreased regional myocardial function, diffuse fibrosis, or both. It found that greater LV trabeculation was associated with worse average regional LV function, suggesting that hypertrabeculation may be an epiphenomenon of disease. However, there was no association between the degree of trabeculation and diffuse fibrosis.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy With Left Ventricular Apical Aneurysm

Published on: February 15, 2017

This study examined a subset of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients with left ventricular (LV) apical aneurysms and found that they are at high risk for arrhythmic sudden death and thromboembolic events. Over a 4.4-year follow-up, 3% of these patients died suddenly or of heart failure, and 24% survived with various treatment interventions. The study suggests that identifying this phenotype can help expand risk stratification and lead to effective treatment for potentially life-threatening complications in HCM patients with LV apical aneurysms.

Identifying the Infarct Related Artery Utilizing CMR

Published on: January 12, 2017

In a study involving 113 patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), it was found that in 4% of cases, there was a mismatch between the coronary artery identified on coronary angiography (CA) as the infarct-related artery (IRA) and the artery supplying the territory of acute infarction on CMR. Notably, four of these cases had multiple acute infarctions in different coronary artery territories on CMR, highlighting the potential role of CMR in cases of STEMI with multi-vessel disease.

The study investigated the feasibility of measuring blood pressure differences (ΔP) across coronary arteries using phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI). It utilized three-directional velocities in the coronary arteries and Navier-Stokes equations to derive ΔP. The results showed good reproducibility and a significant increase in ΔP in patients with suspected coronary artery disease, suggesting the potential for noninvasive assessment of coronary artery stenosis using this method.
